Why Should I Have My Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Great question!

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the last teeth to develop and appear in your mouth. They come in between the ages of 17 and 25, a time of life that has been called the “Age of Wisdom.” If you don’t have enough room in your mouth for your wisdom teeth to fully grow in they are called “impacted” — unable to break through the gums because there isn’t enough room. Impacted wisdom teeth should be removed before their root structure is fully developed. In some patients, it is as early as age 12-to-13, and in others it may not be until the early twenties. Problems tend to occur after the age of mid 20s.

Infection

Inflammation and infection are the most common reasons wisdom teeth need to be removed. When a wisdom tooth grows in partially, it can create a breeding ground for bacteria, resulting in an infection. Prompt removal of the offending tooth/teeth is often times the most appropriate treatment. If you begin to experience discomfort caused by wisdom teeth, then give us a call. No need to worry, this can be easily treated.

Cyst Formation

If a wisdom tooth is not removed, a sack of fluid called a cyst can form. Cyst formation around unerupted teeth is fairly common, but wisdom teeth are more prone to having them. A cyst can destroy bone and damage other teeth. The best treatment is prevention. We can help.

Possible Crowding

You know it’s like when you’re in line, waiting for a concert, and they finally open the doors so you can go in and everyone is bumping into you and pushing you out of a(line)ment ? Yeah… your teeth don’t like it either. Most orthodontists prefer wisdom teeth to be removed during or after orthodontic treatment.

Damage to Adjacent Teeth

If wisdom teeth are not removed they can cause damage to adjacent teeth or roots, making them more prone to future decay and periodontal disease. Yeah…that’s a problem.
