Anesthesia

Our first priority is your safety and comfort.

We use several different methods of anesthesia to keep you comfortable.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding your surgery, anesthesia options or home care instructions and tips, please ask us about it. The anesthesia chosen for your surgery depends on the type of procedure and your level of apprehension (how chill you are).

Types of Anesthesia:

Awake & Numb (local anesthetic)

To keep you comfortable during your procedure, a local anesthetic (such as lidocaine) is administered at the surgical site to keep you numb. You will remain totally awake and conscious throughout the procedure. The numbness can last anywhere from 2 to 12 hours depending on the specific type of local anesthesia that is used.

Local anesthesia is commonly used for a variety of cases such as simple tooth extractions, biopsies and other less complicated procedures.

Laughing Gas (Nitrous Oxide)

You’ll remain conscious, but in a relaxed state. Nitrous oxide, which you have have heard called “laughing gas,” has a sedative and pain-controlling effect.

This is typically used during simple procedures as well as more involved surgeries such as wisdom teeth removal and dental implant placement.

Twilight Sedation

You’ll drift in and out of sleep during “twilight sleep,” a form of sedation that helps keep you comfortable and helps alleviate anxiety about your treatment. Though you may occasionally be awake, you’ll be calm and relaxed.

Going To Sleep (IV Sedation / General Anesthesia)

You will fall asleep and be completely unaware of the procedure. Meanwhile, your vital signs are closely monitored by our nurses.

If you’re having wisdom teeth removed or dental implants placed, you will probably have general anesthesia (going to sleep).

Hospital

Occasionally, patients who are very young or have certain medical conditions are scheduled at a hospital. Your surgeon will talk with you if your case should be performed in a hospital setting.
