Impacted Wisdom Teeth

What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Third molars are commonly referred to as wisdom teeth. They are usually the last teeth to develop and are located in the back of your mouth, behind your second molars. Their development is usually completed between the middle teenage years and early twenties, a time traditionally associated with the onset of maturity and the attainment of wisdom.

What Is An Impacted Tooth?

Although most people develop and grow 32 permanent adult teeth, many times their jaws are too small to accommodate the four wisdom teeth. When inadequate space prevents the teeth from erupting they are called impacted. This indicates their inability to erupt into the proper position for chewing and cleaning.

Types Of Impactions

We will need to see you for a consultation to determine if you will benefit from wisdom tooth removal. A special x-ray of your mouth and jaws (panorex) will be taken to determine if your wisdom teeth are impacted, if there is room for them to erupt, and how difficult it will be to have them removed.

  • Soft Tissue Impaction: There is not enough room to allow the gum tissue to retract for adequate cleaning of the tooth.
  • Partial Bony Impaction: There is enough space to allow the wisdom tooth to partially erupt. However, the tooth cannot function properly in the chewing process, and creates cleaning problems, among others.
  • Complete Bony Impaction: There is NO space for the tooth to erupt. It remains embedded in the jaw bone or if even partially visible requires complex surgical techniques for removal. The impacted wisdom tooth may also be in an unusual position and difficult to remove. This situation can also arise when the shape or size of the jaw bone and other facial structures make removal of this tooth significantly more complex.

What Our Patients Are Saying

I was referred to Dr. Pfeifle and his staff from our family orthodontist Dr. Matt Becker. I don't usually write reviews but thought this was necessary. I was very impressed with Dr. Pfeifle and his nurses and office staff. When it comes to this stuff I am a complete wuss. I was able to get right in at my scheduled time both for the consultation meeting and the next day for the wisdom teeth extraction. It was over before I knew it. Went home after a 2 hour nap I felt good. No complications afterward. Dr. Pfeifle and his team did an excellent job and they are good people who care

Wonderful experience! I was referred to Dr. Auch by my dentist for wisdom tooth extraction. The office staff was friendly and easy to work with to schedule an appointment. My first pre-op visit went so smoothly, waited only about 10 minutes in waiting room. Dr. Auch has amazing personality and bedside manner and explained the procedure in a detailed, understanding way. The day of the extraction, I didn't even have to wait 5 minutes before being called back. Jodi, the nurse, and Jordyn, the assistant did a wonderful job prepping me and making my nerves go away and feeling calm. Needles make me nervous, but Jodi stuck my vein right away and I hardly felt the poke. After the procedure, I had minimal discomfort and pain. I really appreciated it when Dr. Auch called to check in later that evening and answered more of my questions. I couldn't be happier with my wisdom teeth experience, and will definitely be telling everyone how great this office is!

What Our Patients Are Saying

I have an unusual medicial condition unrelated to my wisdom teeth extraction. I disclosed it on my health history. Dr. Auch wanted to make sure general anesthesia was safe for me so he called one of my doctors to check it out. My other doctor recommended I make a visit with her to make sure it was safe. Dr Auch called me and relayed all the information to me. I was able to make an appointment with my other doctor the day before my surgery. Turns out my other doctor gave me the green light and we proceeded with the way we had planned. I appreciate him doing that and feel that he went above and beyond to make sure I was safe. Also, I have never had to be put under before so I was a bit anxious just because I didn’t know that to expect. The two gals that prepped me were FANTASTIC. They explained things to me,answered my questions and helped me relax. And the icing on the cake was when I got home Dr. Auch called to see if I was doing ok. I will definitely be recommending them to others!

The whole experience was fantastic! I was pretty nervous about it but the entire staff made it so easy and quick from the moment I walked in the door! I love how they gave me a blanket to make me feel more comfortable during the process. I don’t remember it, but they even helped me get my coats and hat on and got me safety to the car afterwards! Wonderful customer service!
